Dr Wyman Chan is a dentist, researcher, inventor and international dental educator whose work focuses on preserving natural teeth while improving aesthetics, comfort and long-term oral health.

He qualified from Guy’s Hospital Dental School, University of London, in 1981 and was awarded his PhD by the University of Bolton in 2012 following research into the efficacy and safety of tooth-whitening processes.

​

In 2002, Dr Chan became the UK’s first dentist to devote his clinical practice entirely to teeth whitening, establishing Smile Studio, the country’s first dedicated teeth-whitening clinic.

​

Since then, he has completed more than 20,000 tooth-whitening treatments and has developed extensive clinical experience in managing severe discolouration, sensitivity and complex whitening cases.

​

His work combines clinical dentistry, scientific research, education and product innovation, with a consistent emphasis on achieving results while preserving natural tooth structure.

A pioneer in tooth whitening

Dr Chan has played a pioneering role in the development of modern tooth-whitening techniques in the UK.

His approach is centred on individualised treatment planning, clinical assessment and helping patients achieve an agreed target shade while minimising discomfort and unnecessary damage to natural teeth.

His clinical experience includes the treatment of patients with tetracycline staining, fluorosis, mottling, severe discolouration and tooth sensitivity.

Over the course of his career, Dr Chan has also developed whitening formulations, customised trays and thermal-diffusion technologies designed to improve treatment effectiveness and patient comfort.

Clinical innovation

Dr Chan’s work extends beyond conventional tooth whitening into the development of new approaches to oral care.

DWC8

DWC8 is a whitening formulation developed by Dr Chan specifically for patients with highly sensitive and discoloured teeth.

​

It was designed in response to patients who had previously found whitening uncomfortable or difficult to continue.

​

Combined with specific clinical protocols, the system is intended to enable dentists to manage sensitivity while working towards the patient’s chosen target shade.

 

MAGIC3 and MagicFoam

Dr Chan is the founder of the MagicFoam tooth-cleaning method and inventor of MAGIC3 colourless plaque indication and degradation technology.

The technology developed from his clinical observations of dental anxiety, the difficulties some patients experience with plaque control and the challenges of cleaning around orthodontic appliances and vulnerable tooth surfaces.

The system is designed to support non-mechanical cleaning and patient comfort, with applications for children, adolescents, orthodontic patients and patients requiring additional care around sensitive tooth surfaces.

​

Early demineralisation and tooth preservation

Dr Chan’s teaching and clinical protocols also address the management of early demineralisation and non-cavitated caries.

​

His approach combines plaque control, management of the oral environment and support for remineralisation, particularly before, during and after orthodontic treatment.

​

This reflects a wider principle that runs throughout his work: intervening early wherever possible and preserving natural tooth structure.

 

International dental education

Dr Chan has trained dental professionals for more than two decades and continues to teach internationally.

He works regularly with clinicians using the WYMAN system, providing guidance on clinical assessment, treatment planning, technique and the review of complex cases.

Dr Chan has developed a substantial portfolio of dental inventions and technologies.

His identified patent portfolio includes 17 historical patent grant records across the UK, United States and China, covering technologies relating to tooth whitening, dental trays, temperature-control devices, oral-care compositions and associated equipment.

​

Further Chinese invention applications include technologies relating to plaque indication and degradation, oral cleaning, tooth whitening, oral-environment regulation and non-invasive dental aesthetic treatment.
